Bird Box schemeMalvern Community Forest are now running a bird box sponsorship scheme. For £8 you can sponsor a bird box which will be numbered and placed in local woodlands including the Community Woodland at Townsend Way. During the nesting season a bird box survey will be carried out by a qualified ornithologist and we will let anyone who sponsors a box know what activity has taken place in their boxes. Bird box kits are also available for anyone to purchase and place in their own garden or orchard. Anyone purchasing a box for their own garden will need to pick up the kits from an address in Malvern when they have been delivered by the manufacturers. Two types of box are available. Hole-fronted and open-fronted. The Hole-fronted box is ideal for Blue Tits, Great Tits, Pied Flycatchers, etc. The Open-fronted box is suitable for Robins and Pied Wagtails. We will also be running a workshop in January 2011 where you can help construct the kits if you wish. This years occupantsA number of the Malvern Community Forest bird box's that have been sponsored have been occupied by various families.
One pair of Great Tits have hatched 7 young and another Great tit family have fledged 10 young.
A juvenile pair of Blue tits have 3 babies that have fledged but a number of their eggs didn't hatch. A number of our boxes have been used by the Malvern Hills Pied Flycatcher project. This year 6 pairs successfully fledged young, One of our boxes has been used by a pair of Pied Flycatchers. The parents and 6 young have all been ringed. You can sponsor a box now ready for the 2011 season. To sponsor a box download a form and post it to the address on the form.We will then let you know about the birdbox workshop nearer the time.
