Tree o'clock
A nationwide initiative has been set up by the BBC to encourage more people to plant trees as part of National Tree Week. The BBC’s Breathing Places ‘Tree O’clock’ Campaign on 5 December is an attempt at breaking the Guinness World Record for the most trees planted in multiple locations in one hour (the current record stands at 653,143) and the Guinness World Record for the most trees planted in one location in one hour (the current record is 18,124). 35 people helped Malvern Community Forest plant 300 Hazel trees at Ravenshill Woodland Reserve at Alfrick in a recently coppiced area that had been damaged by Deer. We planted them in 28 minutes. The BBC kindly provided freebies for the children and refreshments were provided. Thanks to everyone who helped in any way, particularly Councillor
Joe Smith who acted as an independent witness. Waitrose Community FundMalvern Community Forest received a cheque for £455 from Waitrose as part of their Community Fund scheme in August 2009.
Tour of Townsend Way woodland
On Tuesday 22nd September Ian Rowat, Chief Executive of Malvern Hills Conservators, led about 35 members of Malvern Community Forest on an interesting and informative tour of the Conservators Community Woodlands off Townsend Way near Morrisons. This woodland was planted about 15 years ago and Ian Rowat described how the planting was undertaken and how it is being managed. This was followed by a social drink at the Swan Inn at Newlands
where sandwiches were kindly provided by Duncan Ironmonger, the
landlord. Visit to Dorsington Farm woodsMembers of Malvern Community Forest visited the woods on Dorsington Farm on the Worcestershire Warwickshire border on Friday 29th May. The woods are owned by Felix Dennis who has funded the planting of this native deciduous woodland over the past 12 years. Members had a very interesting tour around the plantings by Stephen Coffey, the woodland manager, who described the benefits of random planting and the benefits and drawbacks of organic planting and maintenance. The afternoon was very informative and members found the planting schemes very inspirational, particularly the use of fruit trees and the method of planting along the rides.
